I’M SURE THAT A lot of you would have heard that three doctors have now been confirmed to have Coronavirus.

Viral reports officially say that ‘Three medical doctors at the Alimosho General Hospital and Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, have tested positive for COVID-19.’

This was disclosed in a statement released by the Medical Guild in Lagos, signed by the Chairman and Secretary of the guild, Dr Oluwajimi Sodipo and Dr Ismail Ajibowo respectively.

According to the statement, the three affected doctors have been admitted at different isolation facilities in Lagos for treatment and are in stable conditions. The statement added that doctors at Alimosho General Hospital, Ikorodu General Hospital, Lagos General Hospital and Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) have also been exposed to COVID-19 cases and have been tested for the ravaging virus.

Even the Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, had stated that 40 medical professionals have been infected with the dreaded Coronavirus across the country in the course of fighting the pandemic.

With every new day, the risk of getting infected keeps rising, especially for frontliners like us.

Recently, the Federal Government approved the Special Covid-19 Hazard and Inducement Allowance for health workers, which will be 40% of consolidated basic salary, but while this is a laudable effort, the more important question in such a setting as ours is: Would this actually take effect immediately, or will it end up as another means for the government to score cheap political points?

Despite the financial inducement, a good number of health professionals still wonder if any amount of financial inducement is worth the risk of death at this point of time.

Is it worth the risk?
